Bear Reports | Carolyn Foote Edelmann - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

Bear Reports | Carolyn Foote Edelmann

lately, there’ve been reports
of black bear sightings
along many of my daily trails
– regrettably, a day or so
after my eager excursions
at the Pole Farm
I follow very deep
intense
extremely straight tracks
incised through mud
in the dark wood
and o, how I want them
to mean coyote
near Keefe Road,
next to my parked car’s back tire
this stack of very pointy
very glossy
berry-filled
black scat
could very well be
weasel
don’t get me wrong
I’m happy for brown thrashers
green frogs
rare monarchs, sipping
among flowers taller than I
on the bridges trail
where the fox roams
I count twenty paces between
bursts of “eau de terroir”
why then
does it matter
so very much
that these sites
belong to the bears?

Fair Peacock | Joseph C. Ogbonna - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

Fair Peacock | Joseph C. Ogbonna

Flamboyantly clad,
Feathers arranged in an astonishing
array of colours,
distinctively seen,
brightest of all,
and uniquely adorned for
a century’s wedlock in
a bird’s haven.
That is I, the Peacock.
The angel with elegance that you
crave for.
An epitome of standards coveted by
models fair.
Endowed by nature with neither
mascara nor lipstick.
But having features elusive that
pageants in a lifetime ache for.

The Girl Who Disappears | Amanda K. Dudley-Penn - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

The Girl Who Disappears | Amanda K. Dudley-Penn

Am I that girl?
Am I the girl who disappears?
Am I the one who speaks too softly?
Am I the one no one hears?
Are those the questions that I will ask
As I take my final breath?
Will I have made a mark on this earth
Before I meet with death?
Am I but a whisper
In the minds of those I’ve met.
Have I done something good,
Something they won’t forget?
Have I stood up against wrongs?
Have I stood my ground?
Or have I yelled against the wind
And no one heard a sound?
Have I raised my chin determined?
Have I been brave?
Have I cried out at injustice
Even when I was afraid?
Or am I the lonely girl
Who fades silently away?
The girl who no one has memories of
Or who had nothing to say?
Am I the girl who
No one wanted to hold dear?
Am I that girl
The girl who disappears.

The Truth | Sravani Singampalli - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

The Truth | Sravani Singampalli

You cannot teach a river
How to flow.
You cannot tell a flower
When to bloom.
You cannot advise a fish
To fly high in the sky.
We all are unique and will shine
When the right time comes.

Guardians | Dee Allen - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

Guardians | Dee Allen

They stand watch
Over everything precious
That thrived in moist shadows
And passed beneath them

Coastal Redwoods:
Towering, supremely thick,
Rust-coloured specimens
Of wood with

Twelve-inch bark,
Giant elders,
Guardians of groves
At first glance, intimidating-looking

Yet inviting,
Maintained a steady vigil
One thousand years or less

Some humans rightfully saw
Fit to preserve these
Ancient watchers of life

When they wandered through
One of the groves,
William and Elizabeth Kent
Witnessed still, unspoiled

Botanical beauty, vowed its
Protection from the logger
Saw’s ripping touch and
Gave it John Muir’s name

Verdant patches of three-leaf clovers,
Sprawling coils of fern,
Tall, slender Douglas firs
Trying hard to imitate

Their mightier redwood cousins,
Hungry squirrels scamper the dirt
Floor on a foraging trip, a craving for acorns,
Fallen or on a branch, needs sating,

Lean little trickle of water running
Down an extensive ditch towards Mount Tamalpais way,
Sorry masquerade as a full, rushing creek,
The steady march of hikers

Boots and sneakers treading new
Grooves into over worn trails
Are offered protection & shade
By the guardians
In return.

Snow | M K Sandhu - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

Snow | M K Sandhu

Soundless as it falls
Neutral in colour complementing all
Overspread like smiles of happiness
Winter wishes coming true, no less.

The Thirteenth Hour | Dan Tindall - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

The Thirteenth Hour | Dan Tindall

These elderly invaders
Have long since gone
Native on the poor rocky
Soil and ancient drainage
Where Bold Kevin
His chainsaw
And his musical ear defenders
Cut logs for fuel from
The fallen corpses left by
Unexpected storms
Business has no place here
In the shadow of fierce uplands
Where desperation breeds resignation
Just at the moment
When cooperation should
Confront change
And so wrap its many selves
In a warm layer of
Birdsong and light
The blue plume of the two-stroke
Lingers and seems
For a second to
Look west
Then is dispersed
Conveniently forgotten
Amongst the restless pollen clouds

Wind | David Sermersheim - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

Wind | David Sermersheim

wind…
from where have you come
where do you go
what do you carry
whom do you know
circling round corner
nestling in crevice and seam
scattering seeds over meadow
gathering fragrance from blossom and bloom
swaying beneath your stride
ever restless and impatient
running full circle wide
pausing to gather your wits
before driving ever on
