I had no life before having children
Things predating are entirely obscure
My life started by seeing the total wonder
Total consciousness, total awareness
The child knowing without fearing
Parents are totally immersed
Witnessing the boundless
Tools of development

Honor and cherish your child’s freedom
Freedom unhampered by regimentation
Don’t hasten to revert to the predated
It will all come along soon enough

Mom's the Word | Ivan Jenson - Read Poetry Online by Talented Contemporary Poets

Mom’s the Word | Ivan Jenson

I remember when I
knew that our long
windy conversation
was over
and that I had said
absolutely everything
to you
like a voice over
a montage of years…
I confessed, joked
bragged, sought advice
begged forgiveness
or crossed over the line
and made you cross
as I stood under
the crucifix
of your righteousness
yes, you will always be
Saint Ana Teresa
to me
and I still can’t fathom
all that you have meant
or why you now give me
this endless silent
treatment

Not Everything That Glitters Is Gold | Janice Canerdy - Read Poetry Online by Talented Contemporary Poets

Not Everything That Glitters Is Gold | Janice Canerdy

Some lessons we attempt to teach our kids
they’ll learn the hard way through experience
as we did. Then we’ll hurt as their hearts break
and love them as they struggle to make sense
of life with all its unexpected turns,
of friends and lovers who deceive and lie,
who leave them feeling life is just a sham,
that happiness and love have passed them by.
It isn’t just the young who are deceived.
We’re not exempt—we who are growing old—
from lessons taught by life: sometimes it’s hard
to tell what’s genuine and what’s fool’s gold.
