When You Leave | David Sermersheim
when you leave
I will smile
as you turn
away and go
while these words
sketch the outline
of where you were
when you leave
I will smile
as you turn
away and go
while these words
sketch the outline
of where you were
Summer’s searing heat
filled the day.
A tree shaded path,
gave respite to weary travelers
who stopped to rest.
Seated upon lush green,
stories were shared.
A time to think about
all that had transpired.
A sanctuary of the heart,
to all who gathered there.
Refreshed, spirits buoyed,
the pilgrims moved on.
Once again trees opened
welcoming arms to
the next to pass this way.

For at least one
moment’s wingspan
I am free from worry,
liberated from all
the needle voices,
then memory and life
bring me back down
into my suit of care.
It’s that indescribable feeling
Laughing and smiling one
Minute, then the concrete
Block lands on your head
Brain goes foggy, an unknown
Fear clouds the mind,
The weight of the world
Upon one’s shoulders,
Struggling to smile
Smiling all the while
Hiding behind a smile
Never wanting anyone
To see nor wanting them
To feel way you do,
Always smiling or trying
And then, just like that
It’s gone, the weight
Has been lifted.
