When I disagree, I draw your ire
Always hear, “Lake of fire, ”
Do I want to go
Of course it’s a no
One disgruntled grimace
Can’t change my stance
Strange faces and gazes
Is this what family is?
Who am I impressing
With this style of dressing?
Does your crescendo of passion
Help focus your action?
The text speaks to you?
All your unpleasant acts hit undo?
Everything positive that occurs
Causes you to say, “Thank you, sir.”
Have you lost your sense of independence?
You’re too dependent
On what’s in a book
Don’t give me that look
Being an astute voyeur
I’ve witnessed the change in character
These clothes don’t fit you
Even from 7 to 2
No amount of prayer absolves you
Sure, you can change what you do
The sins will be prevalent
HE is omniscient
Why do you pester me?
Not going satisfies me
I believe a certain way
I will not go with you Sunday

Embellished Fate | Tara Lynn Hawk - A Poetry Website Featuring Poems by Contemporary Poets

Embellished Fate | Tara Lynn Hawk

These things
They insist on referring to as
“miracles”
Germinated and formed in your
own mind and with
your hands
They seek to take a piece of and
tax in some medieval manner
Leaving you in turn with nothing
Leaving you to your fate
Presented to you on some gold-
colored platter
An unwanted gift from the court
of Agamemnon
Send it back

Anguish | Cattail Jester - A Poetry Website Featuring Poems by Contemporary Poets

Anguish | Cattail Jester

You left me knocking at
the door cold below
your banner proclaiming
love.
You did not notice me
or care even when I tried
to offer you my gift twice.
Three times, four.
Maybe more.
You sent me away
with looks and disdain,
judgment and agenda.
This is how it always is
with you.
Proclaiming you are love
on earth – I can see my
breath in your proclamation.
I will strike out
on my own, find out what
love really means.
A wandering pilgrim trying
out the path.

In the Beginning | Stan Morrison - A Poetry Website Featuring Poems by Contemporary Poets

In the Beginning | Stan Morrison

in the beginning a god created
this god with no beginning
created all that is wondrous
this god with no ending
leaving us baffled by the unknown
thinking the profane is wisdom

we’ve been around long enough
to be overwhelmed over time
by the arrogance of the experts
who haughtily claim exclusivity
the sole pathway to knowledge

everybody walks around in disguise
masked contestants expecting a prize
yet I’ve been here long enough
to derive wisdom from the unknown
a story of no beginning and no end

Executive Clemency | G. Louis Heath - A Poetry Website Featuring Poems by Contemporary Poets

Executive Clemency | G. Louis Heath

We are all under a sentence of death.
We are all on death row. This Earth is
a condemned cell with gray skies.

Cancer brings our calls for clemency.
An accident cripples and we invoke
God’s healing help, our voices fervent.

A gunman opens fire in our school and
we leap for cover, pray for one more
day, as bullets spray all around.

For the victims, we hold memorials,
create scholarships in their names,
to mask our elation that we live.

We stoop in guilt, steeped in the dogma
we are the Chosen Ones. But we have
done the choosing, Hell over God.
