Coming of Age – A Poem by Naduni

I thought I was in love
When I dreamt of you at night
When I yearned for a glimpse
Of your smile in the morning
When I suddenly stopped listening and thought of you in class
When I kept awake till small hours
I thought I was in an eternal love
When you declared you’ll stay with me
Till death…
When you enquired every day after my health
When I used to see your face in the mirror of my dressing table,
On the ripples of my bath tub,
On the leaves of my notebook,
And on the pillow of my bed.
But when I saw you holding her close and declaring
That you’ll stay with her till death
The bubble exploded
The spell broke
The trance was undone…
I was left disillusioned
That was the day I came of age
