Poppies | Chris Byrne - Appreciate Language and Form through the Best Contemporary Poetry

Poppies | Chris Byrne

I imagined how they smelt
When I was younger,
Innocent dreamer
Full of dreams, daring,
Did I see green fields
Abundant full of life?
I was lost, bullied
In school and at home
The burnt-out cars
Abandoned buildings
Playgrounds full of gullies
School yards full of fences
Where poppies growled
With nowhere to hide
Still they grew
